Psi Beta Honor Society hosted its 6th Annual Suicide Prevention Training and 5K, Saturday, April 12.  Adam Metts, Director of East Texas A&M Counseling Center, and Tina Yang, Ph.D., Associate Director, presented QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) training.

Heavyn Smith said of the training: "Just like CPR, the more people who know how to talk to someone who is thinking about suicide, the more lives we can save."

Dr. Karyn Skaar, Psi Beta sponsor, reported that 50+ people attended the event.

"We had participants who ran the event (our own Dr. Yox, Director of the honors program), walked, walked while pulling a wagon with small children, and walked and blew soap bubbles. We must become knowledgeable and comfortable talking about suicide, if we hope to address this health issue," Skaar said.

Psi Beta members want to thank all who participated and supported this cause. Psi Beta is the national honor society in psychology for community colleges. Students are selected for the group based on their interest in the field of psychology and high academic performance. This is just one of the many activities that Psi Beta students participate in throughout the year.
